Friday, August 14, 2009 — Song for Les Paul Hey Everybody...Back in my days living in State College I wrote a song about Les Paul called 'Rhubarb Red' which was a nickname he had during the early days of his career as a musician. After reading a story on his history I was inspired to write a kinda historical exposition employing facts from his life and a country-blues feel reminiscent of the Mississippi John Hurt. After being talked into recording the song and giving it to the man himself, I did just that, trekking to NYC and seeing him perform at the Iridium Club in NYC. Of course I never heard any type of reply (and didn't expect to) but after hearing the news of Les Paul's' passing I thought I'd re-record it and post it here in case anyone out there might want to listen...he was a big inspiration to me in many ways, especially multi-track recording and echo effects. so here it is, Rhubarb Red, written around '95 and recorded 8/14/09..I play all the instruments. Getting around to upcoming shows, I'll start with a special bluegrass show at Alsace Township Community Park on Saturday, August 15th from 5 to 7PM. cost is free, all-weather and will feature Michael Beaky (Manatawny Creek Ramblers, Pavlov's Dawgs) on banjo, Randy Krater (Youngers, Manatawny Creek Ramblers) on upright bass and myself on guitar and harp, also singing most of the songs on the mostly traditional bluegrass set list. It will be a unique musical day for me and hopefully I'll get a good recording so I can post some things here but until then, here's some related stuff to listen to- PAVLOV'S DAWGS -Michael & I used to play in this other bluegrass band back in the early 90's based in the Lehigh Valley. I was a recording geek then, too, and as keeper of the tapes I hope to keep posting some of our finer moments here from time-to-time. Texas Tango -our cover of that awesome David Lindley song/recorded at Godfrey Daniels' Coffeehouse in Bethlehem, PA - 4/21/92 Hobo Song -the classic Jack Bonus song made famous by Old & in the Way/recorded off the board at Leiderplatz/Musikfest but NOT the version that was recorded from the audience and 'officially' released (and sonically substandard)...please to enjoy! - 8/13/98 Blue Divide -I've always loved this Richard Shindell song (title track from his marvelous 2nd album) and was happy it wasn't too sensitive for the folks at the Rooney Mountain Bluegrass Festival in Deposit, NY - 7/31/93 Lost In The Forest -this is one of my first songs (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction -Way out of my range but that didn't stop me/both of these songs were recorded by Todd Jones and recently found and transferred from his master board tapes at the Railroad House in Sinking Spring, PA - 4/13/91 Of course I'll be back at Zeno's Pub in State College, PA with JK on this and every Sunday. Next Sunday, August 23rd I'll be performing a special show at the State Theater up the street from Zeno's as part of the 'Local Singer-Songwriter night' with Richard Sleigh, JR Mangen & Andy Tolins. The show starts at 7PM, tickets are still available online and afterward I'll walk up the street and do my regular Sunday night show at Zeno's with the boys. On Wednesday, August 19th I'll play solo acoustic at Emily's Pub near Mohnton, PA from 6 to 9PM. This is the last Wednesday on the official schedule, but I'm working on extending that every-other-Wednesday gig as well as adding a few fridays...stay tuned for news on that...
