Winter Fun

January 23rd, 2011

Hey Everybody-

I hope you all are staying warm and getting to where you need to go, it’s been an interesting winter thus far….I’ve been lucky with gigs, haven’t had any cancellations yet, which is always the thought when you book a show in the winter, so we’ll just keep our fingers crossed for snow (if it has to fall) on Tuesdays…Besides live gigs,  I have been in the studio a fair amount on three different projects- the Miz album is about finished, Joel Henry’s album is about done as well, and as stated last time, I’ve begun work on the acoustic project I’ve always wanted, a rootsy collection of acoustic music boasting the playing of some of my very talented friends, heavy on picking, tentatively titled ‘Into the Garden’. That project is just beginning and is a work in progress, which means I’ll be working on it for awhile. I’ll post any cool roughs that pop up, tho.

I’m not exactly sure what Joel Henry’s project will eventually be called, whether it will be ‘The Worms’ or something else, and there is more than enough first-rate finished material for at least three albums so I think he’s gonna release it in volumes, but I’ll let you know when that decision is definitive, all that is still being worked out as we get closer to mixdown…the last song we’re doing for it involves this line-up, just to give you an idea of what’s going on- the old Ola Belle Reed classic ‘High on a Mountaintop’ done with frailing banjo, guitar-mando-harp, as sung by my wife Julie. Although I get to play a pretty heavy amount on this record, just about everybody else in Reading plays on it at one point or another on it as well, stay tuned for a release date/samples.

I’m happy to continue my 3rd Thursday residency at the Stonersville Hotel, near Birdsboro, PA with no cover and great food specials at the venue closest to my home, a very warm place to eat, drink, hear music and play, or just hang. I return February 17th.

MiZ has been chugging along in the studio, continuing work on an album of Mike Mizwinski’s material as performed by members of his 5-piece band which includes myself on various instruments (mostly Barry Mandoe), AJ Jump on most drum tracks, Freeman White’s masterful keyboards and Bill Stetz on the upright and electric basses and let me tell you, under the production of ex-Badlees guy Bret Alexander is the most diverse, best-sounding record I’ve had a hand in since ‘Long Year’, I am very proud of this album. No set release date yet, but we’re really pushing for early spring, fingers crossed. The band has some great dates on the books in the coming winter weeks, notably an opener with Cabinet at ABC in Harrisburg this week (with Dylan filling in for a missing Stetz this time), a return to home base at the River Street Jazz Cafe on 2/18 and visits to Snowball in York (2/19),  NYC (2/25) and Philadelphia (2/26) Details below…

Also, Garcia Grass is gearing up for a nice winter run starting at Winterfest in Stroudsburg, PA  (1/29) we’ll be doing a 1 hour set at 7PM. Then it’s off to the River Street Jazz Cafe in PLains, PA directly afterwords for a full show later that night.  The next week we’ll continue with our ‘Roll of the Dice Tour 2011 (because of the weather) with stops at the Burning Barrel (between Wellsboro and Galeton in northern PA) on Friday (2/4), the Wellsville Creative Arts Center in Wellsville, NY on Saturday (2/5) and finally a visit to the Elk Creek Cafe in Milheim, PA on Sunday (2/6) at 4PM.  I’ll still be making my weekly solo stop at Zeno’s Pub later that night in State College at 9PM.
